EXAMPLE OF REJECTING A MARKETING OFFER
Step one: Interrupt
·        I’m sorry
Step two: Tell them you are busy
·        I’m in the middle of something right now
·        Unfortunately, I can’t take your call right now
·        You have caught me at a bad/busy time

Step three:  Next step

·        Could you send me….
·        Could you please call me back?
·        Could I call you back?
·        Could I ask you to call me back?
EXAMPLE OF REJECTING A JOB OPPORTUNITY
Step one: Thank you
·        I really appreciate your offer
·        Thank you for getting in touch with me
·        Thank you for letting me know about this opportunity
·        Thank you for your generous offer

Step two: reject with a reason
·        Unfortunately….
·        I’m under contract for the next 12 months
·        I’m currently pursuing other opportunities more aligned with my career goals. I’m seeking …. Please let me know if you have any other opportunities in this area.
·        I’m not in a position to pursue any new opportunities right now.
·        I’m not sure I can accept this position or not.  Could I ask for a week to consider it?
Step three:  ending and keeping the door open
·        Best of luck in your search for a candidate.  I would be grateful to stay in touch and I will certainly contact you if anything changes for me.
·        I have your contact and will certainly be in touch if anything changes.
·        Could I call you if anything changes
YES TO RELOCATING
·        Yes.  I am willing to relocate.  Finding a good position is my priority.
NO TO RELOCATING
·        Actually I am not.  I am very committed to Vancouver for the next five years while my children are in high school / while I complete my studies/…
·        Sorry I am not. Unfortunately, I’m not prepared to live in such a cold climate.
KEEP THE DOOR OPEN!
